About Maria De Los Angeles Rivera

Maria de Los Angeles Rivera is a certified public accountant. She currently serves as a tax partner and the international business center director at Kevane Grant Thornton, an accounting and advisory firm based in Puerto Rico.

Established more than 43 years ago, Kevane Grant Thornton has served public and private companies, nonprofit organizations and government agencies in a wide range of industries, including consumer products, retail and wholesale; financial services; health care; technology, media and communications; industrial products; real estate and construction; travel, tourism and leisure. With a comprehensive scope of services, professionals from the company handle financial statements audits, compliance issues, corporate, business and international tax, as well as tax incentive programs. The company also advises high net worth individuals and wealthy families on individual taxation, estate and succession planning, and global mobility strategies.

Rivera has been actively involved in the public accounting sector for over 34 years. With a special expertise in tax-related issues in the hospitality and industrial sectors, Rivera assists businesses and entrepreneurs in minimizing corporate, income, estate and gift taxes. At Kevane Grant Thornton, Rivera supervises the company’s tax department and coordinates internal training sessions. Since the inception of the Opportunity Zone tax program, Rivera has worked closely with real estate developers and funds, designing tax and investment strategies in Opportunity Zones throughout Puerto Rico.

Prior to joining Kevane Grant Thornton, Rivera served as a tax senior manager at Ernst & Young, where she advised companies in the hospitality, manufacturing and communications industries. She also served as a tax manager at Touche Ross, an accounting firm that later merged with Deloitte.

For her experience and achievements as an established woman tax professional, Rivera has been accoladed by the Women Who Lead organization as an Executive Woman Leader. She has also been recognized as one of the most influential experts in the international accountancy society by the International Accounting Bulletin.

Rivera holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from the Pontifical Catholic University of Puerto Rico, and an MPA in tax from the University of Texas at Austin. She is a member the Puerto Rico Chamber of Commerce and the Puerto Rico Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Rivera is a widely sought-after guest speaker to conferences related to various tax programs, including the Opportunity Zone tax incentive. She writes frequently on taxation for local newspapers and magazines. Rivera speaks Spanish and English.
